Annoying Political Quotes

It’s been a busy week already, with lots of venom being spit back and forth, so we thought we’d lighten things up a bit. The Associated Press today has a list of “most annoying quotes” from sales clerks:

“Uh, that’s not my department.” Ever hear that in a store? Did visions of fiendish violence against the clerk flash through your mind? “Not my department” topped the list of Most Annoying Words from Salesperson’s Mouth, cited by 29 percent, in a poll of shopping mall customers by a retail consulting firm.

No. 2? The classic, “If it’s not on the rack, we don’t have it.” That golden oldie was cited by 25 percent.

“That’s the policy,” “I’m on a break,” “Ask the person over there,” “I’m new here,” “You’ll have to wait your turn” and “The computer is down” rounded out the list.

The survey involved 230 shoppers at U.S. malls, conducted by Ridgewood, N.J.-based MOHR Access.

With that in mind, what are the most annoying political quotes you’ve encountered?

  2. “Flip-Flopper” – appeals to the need to reduce everything to a convenient mini-phrase, accurate or not, and used to attack an opponent on one’s own weak point. SEE “Republican National Convention 2004″/Orwell’s “1984” – “groupthink”

  4. “Activist judges” = judges who disagree with me – maliciously increases disrespect for the judiciary, who are intentionally unaccountable to grandstanding pols.

  6. “compassionate conservatism” – easily the most dishonest slogan in recent times.  We can pretty much tell there’s no conservatism there, and compassion has been in short supply from that quarter, too.

  21. Rich, you think the phrase “Working Poor” is one of the most annoying political quotes you’ve heard?

    You must realize that many Americans have full-time employment that fails to come anywhere close to paying the costs of food, housing, and health care.  The minimum wage has not kept up with inflation, and especially not with the skyrocketing health costs caused by greedy insurors and pharmaceutical companies.

    If you think the phrase “working poor” is nonsense, let me be the first to call you a Country Club Republican.

  23. If raising the minimum wage is the answer, why not $20.00 an hour? Maybe $40.00 an hour? $100,000 a year? The government can’t set wages to help the working poor. Working to increase your individual value is the only way to do that. The definition of poor is another discussion. I do belong to a country club, I’m republican and proud of it! Not bad for a boy from the Bronx!

    Rich, I don’t think raising the minimum wage to $20/hour is necessary, but the amount should really be the subject of honest study by our legislators, not numbers we make up on blogs.  It’s a solid fact that the minimum wage has not kept up with inflation.  (And I could further quibble that the “basket of goods” metric for inflation is inadequate, since it ignores health insurance and educational costs, both of which have skyrocketed even compared to inflation.)

    But you’re apparently arguing that we should have no minimum wage at all: “The government can’t set wages to help the working poor. Working to increase your individual value is the only way to do that.”

    Do you think what Bush has done in New Orleans–suspending the minimum wage by fiat so that homeless laborers are paid whatever the Bechtel and KBR no-bid contractors think is fair–is ok?

    What specifically do you mean by “working to increase your individual value?”  That sounds an awful lot like empty “ownership society” rhetoric to me.  Talking about stock portfolios and investments is irrelevant to someone who’s already working two jobs yet cannot even pay the rent or pay hospital bills.

    And to your final point: *that* is my definition of “working poor.”  You work hard, you spend wisely, and you still fall farther behind every day.

    That’s not attributable to some character flaw.  That’s just how our system works today.  We can fix it if we try, but let’s not pretend there’s no problem.

  30. Eddy: You are obviously not from the Bronx! I don’t drive a hummer and I don’t pretend the government can fix everything. I do enjoy bacon. I just think people that rely on the government end up like the victims of Katrina. Dependent and left in a cycle of poverty. Do you really think the government gives a sh_ _ about any of us. It is faceless and has no ability to be compassionate. Don’t make the mistake of thinking your feelings can be translated into government action. That’s pitiful.If you are from the Bronx, you didn’t live in my neighborhood. Thank God!
